Introducing the Smart Water Filter Health Monitoring System, a cutting-edge solution designed to revolutionize the way we ensure clean and safe drinking water. With increasing concerns about water quality and chemicals, it is crucial to have an advanced system that provides real-time monitoring and notifications. The Smart Water Filter Health Monitoring System is the future of water purification, empowering you to safeguard your health and well-being with ease.

Background:

The global market size for home water filter systems reached $11.48 billion in 2020 and it is projected to skyrocket at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.9%, reaching a staggering market size of $24.11 billion by 2025. Just imagine the incredible potential and opportunities that lie within this booming industry.

In the United States, safe drinking water has become a mission critical project for both state and federal governments. Between 2017 and 2021, they allocated a budget of over $25 billion to ensure access to clean and safe drinking water. In 2022, the US government passed the infrastructure law with a budgeted funding of $50 billion for the EPA to tackle clean drinking water.

Team composition

  • Solution Architect: This is a senior subject matter product expert, who participated in defining the product features working with the customer, based on market assessment, product maket fit, roadmap. Etc.
  • Project Manager: This person was responsible for breaking the scope of work into a manageable product development plan, test plan, and delivery plan in close consultation with the customer.
  • Hardware Engineer: This person was responsible for creating the hardware design of the system, that includes the BOM selection, electrical engineering design, and a mechanical prototype design for the device enclosures.
  • Embedded Software Engineer: This person was responsible for programming the device to perform sensing operation and communicating with the cloud server and mobile app.
  • App Developers: These developers were responsible for developing the Android and iOS user apps for the product.
  • Backend Engineer: This person was responsible to build the cloud hosted backend platform with integrations to the device and the mobile app. This also included creation of a merchant admin panel and orer management system.
  • DevOps Engineer: This person was responsible for implementing the infrastructure required for real-time communication, data storage, training system, managing scale, managing peaks, etc.

Challenges

  • The smart domestic water filter project encountered significant challenges, spanning sensor calibration and accuracy, sensor integration, data analysis, connectivity and communication, and user experience.
  • Achieving accuracy in sensor readings and seamless integration of various sensors into the system required meticulous calibration and technical proficiency.
  • Analyzing the vast amounts of data generated by the system and ensuring robust connectivity were essential components, demanding a nuanced understanding of data analytics and networking.
  • The challenges extended to creating a positive user experience, necessitating expertise in user interface design to ensure the system's ease of use and user satisfaction.

Solutions

Our team worked on the solution of 4 component sections:

  • Mini-Lab Mechanical Device: Differential Pressure Sensing and flow sensing.
  • IoT Device: Electro-Mechanical Interface, Data communication, Control and Routine Operation, Interface with middleware (cloud) via API calls.
  • Middleware: Cloud hosted computing and IoT communication solution. This includes training and an inference algorithm running in batch and on-demand modes on the cloud server. This also included a comprehensive admin panel and order management system for order fulfillment and customer support.
  • Front end Mobile App: Consumer notification and view of filter health together with a ordering system based on best available price and availability search when a new filter is required.

Added Value

Overcoming these challenges ensured the successful implementation of a reliable and user-friendly smart domestic water filter system that enhanced water filter health monitoring and user satisfaction.
